Logan City, UT and Cache County, UT Business Licenses: An Owner's Checklist Before Funding

Partners reviewing a request often ask whether the business is licensed where it operates. In Cache Valley, where it operates is not always the city on the envelope.

In short

Ironport Capital Group, a small-business funding service in Logan, Utah, wrote this checklist for Cache Valley owners preparing a funding request. It explains why a Logan mailing address does not always mean a Logan City license, how North Logan and county areas differ, and which license records funding partners commonly check. Legal requirements are for the city, county and your attorney.

Why a funding partner asks about your business license

Partners want to know the business they are reviewing exists, operates where it says, and is in good standing. A current local license is one of the simplest pieces of evidence. More important than the license itself is that it matches everything else: the business name, the address and the owner on the license should be the same as on the bank account, the tax return and the entity registration.

Mismatches slow a review down, for example a license issued to a sole proprietor's own name while the bank account is in an LLC's name, or a license at an old address after a move.

A Logan, UT mailing address is not always Logan City, UT

Census figures show how far ZIP 84321 reaches beyond the city. In the 2020 ZIP-to-place relationship file, Logan covered only 6.3% of the land in ZCTA 84321. River Heights and Nibley sit almost entirely inside that same ZIP, and 15.7% of Logan's own land falls in ZCTA 84341, the ZIP that mostly covers North Logan. A business with a Logan mailing address may therefore be in Logan City, in another city, or in an unincorporated part of the county.

The city or county can confirm from the street address which office your business deals with. Checking that first avoids applying to the wrong office.

Logan City, UT business license application: what to have ready

Whichever office turns out to be yours, have these basic records in hand before you start an application:

  • The legal business name and any assumed name, exactly as registered with the state
  • The physical business address, and whether it is a home, a storefront or an office
  • Owner names and contact details
  • A description of the business activity
  • Any state registration, sales tax account or trade license numbers that apply

Logan City, UT business license renewal

Check the expiration date printed on your current license. Partners sometimes check it too, and an expired license can stall a review that is otherwise ready. Put the renewal date in the same calendar as payroll and tax deadlines, and keep a copy of the current license with your funding documents.

North Logan City, UT business license

North Logan is a separate city with its own license. A business on the North Logan side of the boundary, even with a Logan-sounding street address or a ZIP shared with Logan, should ask North Logan before assuming Logan City applies. The same is true for River Heights, Providence, Hyde Park, Smithfield and the other cities in the valley.

Cache County, Utah business license and Cache Valley, UT license questions

Owners searching for a Cache County Utah business license or a Cache Valley business license may be in an unincorporated area, outside any city's limits, such as Benson, whose land is split across ZCTAs 84335, 84321 and 84339. Questions about what applies there go to the county, which you can reach through Cache County's official website.

How to get a business license in Utah: the state layer

A city or county license sits on top of state-level steps: registering the business entity or assumed name, and registering for sales tax if you sell taxable goods or services. Those are handled by state agencies, not the city. Many trades also need a state professional or contractor license; contractors should read the Utah DOPL contractor license guide.

How much of each ZIP sits inside its namesake city

The 2020 Census ZCTA-to-place relationship file measures how much of each ZIP's land lies inside the city it is named for. For the towns covered on this site, the shares are small more often than not, which is why a mailing address is a weak guide to which license office applies.

Share of each ZIP's land inside the city it is named for (2020 Census relationship file)
ZIPCityShare of ZIP land inside the city
84321Logan, UT6.3%
84332Providence, UT94.9%
84318Hyde Park, UT68.1%
84339Wellsville, UT11.7%
84335Smithfield, UT8.2%
84319Hyrum, UT5.7%
84337Tremonton, UT4.8%

Land share is not the same as business share: a city can hold most of a ZIP's storefronts on a small part of its land. Use the table as a reason to check, then confirm your own address with the city or county.

One calendar for every renewal date

Partners match records, so a lapse anywhere shows up in the review. Keep these dates in one shared calendar with a reminder 60 days ahead:

  • The city or county business license expiration printed on the license
  • Any trade or professional license expiration, in the same business name
  • The entity's state renewal or annual report date, if your entity has one
  • Insurance policy renewals, especially general liability and workers' compensation certificates customers ask for
  • Equipment lease and loan maturity dates, so a balloon or buyout never arrives unplanned

When a partner asks for current documents, the calendar also tells you which ones are about to change.

The matching-records checklist for a funding request

  1. Legal name on the license matches the bank account and tax return
  2. Address on the license is where the business actually operates
  3. License is current, with the renewal date noted
  4. Any trade license is in the same business name
  5. Entity registration with the state is active

With those five lined up, a request moves faster. The funding side is covered in working capital and the other product pages, and county business figures are on the Logan, UT business page. More checklists are in the Cache Valley guides.

Owner Questions

Still unsure? Call (435) 264-5410

Does a Logan, UT mailing address mean I need a Logan City, UT license?

Not necessarily. ZIP 84321 covers a much larger area than the city, including River Heights and Nibley. The city or county can confirm which jurisdiction your address is in.

Will a funding partner reject a request over an expired Logan City, UT license?

Partners differ, but an expired license can pause a review until it is renewed. Renewing before you apply avoids the delay.

Is a Logan City, UT business license the same as registering an LLC?

No. Entity registration is a state step; the city license is a local one. Ask each office which steps apply to your business; where both records exist, a partner may look for both.
