Why law firm cash flow runs lumpy in a Logan, UT practice
Hourly matters are billed monthly but paid on the client's schedule. Flat-fee matters pay at milestones. Contingency matters pay nothing until resolution, while the firm advances filing fees, expert costs, depositions and records requests. A small firm's month can swing from very strong to very thin depending on which matters closed.
Law firm financing options mostly smooth that swing. A line of credit is the common tool: draw in thin months, repay when a matter pays.
Case costs on contingency matters
Contingency work ties up the firm's money in case costs for months or years. Some firms fund costs from operating cash, some from a line, and some through specialized litigation funders, which this site does not cover. Business loans for law firms from ordinary partners are reviewed on the firm's overall income, not on the expected value of a single case.
Trust accounts are not business income
Client trust account balances belong to clients, not the firm. When you share bank statements with a partner, share the operating account; partners reviewing law firm lending understand the difference and will look only at the firm's own deposits.
Law firm partner loans and buy-ins
A lawyer buying into a partnership, or a firm buying out a retiring partner, faces a priced transaction. Law firm partner loans are usually a term loan to the incoming partner or the firm, reviewed on the firm's financial statements and the lawyer's income. Ask the firm for the partnership agreement's capital terms early.
A labeled example: smoothing a lumpy quarter
Illustration only, with invented figures. A four-lawyer firm's fixed costs, payroll, rent and software, are $48,000 a month. In a quarter where two large matters are still open, deposits run $38,000, $41,000 and $72,000. Without a line, the first two months leave a $17,000 shortfall. A line drawn for $10,000 in month one and $7,000 in month two, repaid in month three, carries interest only for those weeks.
The by-hand step: list twelve months of deposits against fixed costs and mark each month below the line. The largest run of short months is roughly the line size worth asking about.
Small business loans for law firms in Cache Valley, UT: expansion and offices
Moving to a larger office, adding an associate or opening a second office in another Cache Valley town is a priced project. A term loan suits the move; working capital suits the associate's first months before their billing pays for itself.
Intake, marketing and practice software
Small firms spend steadily on intake staff, advertising, case management software and research subscriptions, and those costs do not wait for matters to resolve. A practice area that depends on advertising, such as personal injury or family law, can spend months of marketing before the matters it brings in pay.
When you request funding, show marketing spend next to the matters it produced and when they paid. Partners reading a law firm's request want to see that spending has turned into fees in the past. Software and hardware upgrades are usually a working capital purpose, or equipment financing for hardware.
Cache County, UT law firms: what CBP and NES count
County Business Patterns counted 73 legal services establishments with employees in Cache County in 2023 (NAICS 5411), with 273 employees and about $16.4 million in payroll. Four in five, 59 firms, had under five people on payroll. 55 of the 73 had a ZIP 84321 address (ZBP 2023), a heavier concentration in the Logan ZIP than any other industry on this site, though ZIP 84321 also covers ground beyond city limits.
Nonemployer Statistics counted 57 legal services businesses with no paid staff in 2024 (NAICS 2022 code 5411), a separate program. Accounting firms face a similar fee-timing problem. County data is on the Logan, UT business page.
Some arithmetic of ours from the same 2023 CBP row: the county's 73 legal services establishments averaged 3.7 employees each and about $60,200 of payroll per employee. Of the 73, 55 had a ZIP 84321 address in ZIP Code Business Patterns, about 75%, well above the roughly one-third Logan-ZIP share for auto repair, plumbing and HVAC, or accounting (our arithmetic). Separately, dividing Nonemployer Statistics receipts by its business count gives about $61,300 per nonemployer legal business in 2024 (our arithmetic); that is a different program and is not compared with the employer figures.
Cash-cycle detail: from signed engagement to a fee you can spend
For an hourly or flat-fee matter in a small firm, the path from new client to usable cash runs through several steps, and each one adds days. The day counts below are illustrative only.
- The engagement letter is signed and any advance deposit goes into the client trust account. It is client money, not firm revenue.
- Work is logged through the month and billed at month end, or at the milestone a flat fee names.
- The client pays within the terms on the invoice, often 30 days or more after the work was done.
- Earned amounts move from trust to the operating account only as the work is earned and billed.
- Payroll, rent and software renewals have been paid from the operating account the whole time.
A firm that bills $40,000 in a month and collects it 45 days later has, in effect, a month and a half of wages already spent before that revenue arrives. That figure is invented for this example. Your own billing and collection report gives the real number, and it is usually the first document worth pulling before a request.
